Purpose:
WUMEA is the Witwatersrand University Mining Engineers’ Association with objectives:-
· to further the interests of the mining profession in general and in particular, to strengthen the ties between members of the Association
· to provide opportunities for meeting together
· to provide a direct link between its members, the mining profession and the University of the
Witwatersrand
· to provide finance enabling loans to be made to deserving students reading for a degree in Mining Engineering, Mining Geology, or at the discretion of the Executive Committee, any other engineering degree
Other Activities
WUMEA holds a monthly luncheon on the first Friday of each month at the WITS club; quarterly meetings ; an annual Chairman's Cocktail Party to which all final year students are invited; a Sports Day in conjunction with a sponsor each year featuring golf, squash, darts inter alia; and lastly it holds the annual WUMEA rugby match between a WUMEA side and the current students for the Ted Edwards Shield.
History:
It is unfortunate that there are few records of the early years of the Witwatersrand University Mining Engineers Association and that one must rely on the memories of old WUMEA members. The Association was founded in 1954 as a result of the efforts of Hugh McGregor (Graduate – Aug 1939) who headed up Production Engineers, and Bob Plewman (Graduate – March 1944) who at the time was on City Deep. Constitution:
This constitution has been effective from 1980 and replaces any previous constitution. All assets, liabilities, activities and responsibilities of the previous Association become the responsibility of the Association elected in terms of this constitution. (The full Constitution) Committee:
